All for One - Nice

“All for One – Nice”
Mixed Media and Acrylic on Canvas – July 2016

This was painted the night that I heard of the Nice attacks. For me, painting can be like a prayer. Often it’s done in a reflective or meditative state and the colors and strokes that I choose are the process by which I cry out. In this case, my heart particularly needed to do something to express its emotion. While well over 8,000 people have died this year due to terrorist incidents – and that is 8,000+ too many.. This one hit home because I’ve been to that beach side road. I was there 6 years ago with Richard, then my boyfriend.. it was such a pivotal point in our first real vacation together that I have pictures of us there together up in our house – and I notoriously barely have ANY photos on display in my place. Moreover, my sister had just been there with her family on vacation, and my dad had just flown into France for a week with her and the kids. I knew that they were hours away but I still couldn’t help but think of their experience. One for all and all for one was one of my mottos as a kid. My two besties and I called ourselves the three muskateers. All of these feelings, memories and emotions went into this painting. I wish I would have never had the desire to paint it.

As a French citizen, I can only thank you for this piece Stephanie… It is extremely touching and I do understand what you mean by painting as a prayer. We all have our ways to vent… MERCI.
