Abstract Acrylic on Canvas – 2015
Anima is a Latin word meaning soul. Each and every piece of art that I produce I feel carries a piece of my soul. They express what I cannot.
In continuation with an Oz/Beck theme I had going, I started thinking about my Phoenix painting that I had sold. One of the most beautiful parts of the Phoenix to me is the tail. As I started to paint it, I realized that it also looked a bit like a witch’s broom -> and as I was thinking about Oz, to me there was no point that equaled the transfer to soul as much as when the broom caught on fire, which caught Elphaba (or whatever name you want her to go by) on fire and then water was poured onto her to put the fire out – that lead to her disappearing. It’s the story that many of us know from childhood. And yet, in the story Wicked, it’s noted that she doesn’t actually die or leave, that she’s just transcended to the next phase.. or if you’re an X-men fan like me, only when Jean Grey is nearly being killed by water does she transform into her ultimate form of the Phoenix.
So.. you could call this one Phoenix 2, but I’m choosing Anima – a soul that is created with water and with fire.
