“Child of Ice”
Acrylic on Canvas – March 2015
Last Spring I painted a piece called Child of Light. While I know that it went to the best possible home, deep down I’ve missed that painting. I’ve also really been struggling with feeling down this winter and finding it hard to create winter themed paintings. I tried to combine these two desires in one painting and this is what emerged.
When I was growing up there was a cove in my backyard. Six feet deep in the middle and lined with pine trees, it would freeze up every year and for at least a brief period of time I would go ice skating. I remember 2 pairs of skates – one had 4 blades and was for when I was really little, and then I graduated to a 2 blade pair of skates. In the evenings I would watch ice-skating on television and dream of the costumes and what it might feel like to twirl, jump and fly through the air. That dream was short-lived and this painting leaves me with a bittersweet taste in my mouth from that period of time in my life. But the sweet wouldn’t be sweet if it weren’t for the bitter.. right?
