I actually heard about this drama first on MDL. Lots of folks on there were saying how good it was, though there wasn’t as much hype about it in comparison to other dramas that were coming out like Shark. I did, though, immediately think of the ‘Cruel Summer’ 3Some when I first read the title of this drama. Genius I tell ya!
I watched this drama and was nearly 2/3s the way through episode 1 when I realized exactly why it’s called Cruel City and.. OH. MY. GOSH! is it ever cruel. This is on public television? I’m thinking it can only be aired late at night because, for instance, you see a guy being beat to death by a golf club. As soon as I saw this I ran into the other room to tell Richard because I was thinking this was insane for a Kdrama. Of course, hubby was preoccupied with other more important tings, so I just let it go. For me, it had to be one of the most memorable scenes I’d ever seen in a Korean drama.
Probably my favorite thing about this drama was how beautiful the cinematography was. If you’re going to make a drama that’s that beautiful, then in my opinion this is a must. They totally balance out the dark, sinister disturbing scenes with some gorgeous shots in and around Seoul that show off how beautiful the Seoul skyline is with kind of an edgy, detective feel to it. If you like this sort of drama/movie making then I highly recommend this one on that note alone.
For me, episode one was disturbing. It was about gang warfare, and there were a number of brutal scenes. I didn’t mind it as much because of the artistic shots, and some of it was so twisted that is was almost comical. It reminded me a little bit of the Batman movies that came out in the 1990s.
At the moment it’s Monday, a day before I release this one onto the YouTube interwebs, and I’m having Richard write this as I dictate this blog while I hold and babysit my 4 month old nephew. So I’m cutting this one short.
Thanks for bearing with me while I visit with family back in the States that I haven’t seen in a year. Love you guys!!!
