“Deer at Dawn”
Acrylic on Canvas – October 2017
An animal that I have never had the privilege to see up close in the wild is the fallow deer. Not originally from the US, they have been imported and live in places like Texas and Rhode Island, but in Pennsylvania where I’m from they’re more like livestock than something you’d hunt. They are quite unique though, with horns that are a cross between that of Elk (very common where I’m from) and a moose. Their spots are also quite adorbs.
I guess in some ways, I can see my own self represented within the animal – as I try to do with a lot of things I paint. I’m from the US, but I’ve been uprooted and transplanted and uprooted and transplanted again. It leaves one feeling a bit out of sorts and like they don’t QUITE belong, but this one is at rest. And in that, I can see my own self – I’m not running away, not fully on edge, but resting, and on the cusp of the day.
