Desert Penguin

“Desert Penguin”
Acrylic on Canvas – February 2017
24×30 inches / 61×76 cm

This is the first painting I did after getting back to New York from our vacation to Peru. While we spent most of our time in the capital city, we did make a brief 1 night, 2 day jaunt down to Paracas, which is a national park on the coast. Frankly speaking, it is desert ya’ll. I was all hyped and then I saw sand dune mountain after sand dune mountian. It was also freakishly hot – there was NO wildlife to be seen.. just tourists, heat waves and mini sand storms. And then we hit the coast. Again, not much wildlife.. but there were birds, beautiful cliffs and gorgeous clear blue water that crashed over the rocks.
There’s just something about seeing water after being in the middle of nothing but dry land. I spent so much time enjoying it I got sunburns. However, in the midst of all our pictures I discovered we had seen some penguins! I remember seeing one on a rock thinking those colors look a bit penguin-ish but they wouldn’t be in a hot desert place.. But oh no – there be penguins alright! I’m so happy we stopped and that I got to see them (and a little sand lizard who had lost his tail).
