“Hypnagogic (State of Mind)”
Acrylic on Canvas – March 2017
The state of “threshhold consciousness” where you transition from being awake to falling asleep where your mind begins to dream. I wanted to create a place that’s not a place – a space that feels like you’ve seen it before but you’ve never actually been to or have physical “evidence” that it exists. A painting that’s wholly abstract and yet, familiar and that will resonate to some extent with almost everyone who encounters it. For me, it ties into the hallucinations of when you’re falling asleep where things become fuzzy and the mind opens up. Admittedly, I tend to have rather crazy and absurd (sometimes awful dreams) when I do remember them – lately I’ve been finding myself painting even in my dreams (especially when I was put on doctor’s orders to ease off for a bit.) But in looking at this painting I can see where my mind would take me to outer space, to a garden, to a jungle, to someplace that I need to explore that I haven’t quite done so before. In looking at this, I hope that you too find a reason to dream or to unlock your own creativity.
