Acrylic on Canvas – February 2017
12×24 inches / 30×61 cm
This was a fingerpaint of our youngest cat Minho. I really enjoy painting him with a fun sense of color and feel because he still is very much a kitten. As such he gets into everything! He’s also really inquisitive and while his eyes have a golden hue, they likely won’t for much longer as cats of his breed (Russian Blue) tend to change eye colors as they reach adulthood to a more emerald hue. In this painting, Minho looks like a bit of a t-rex with shorter arms. This is because he had been running around playing and terrorizing a toy brontosaurus that he found in our attic. This particular brontosaurus was a childhood toy (named Yelly) that I had kept because when you squeeze him he gives off a terribly awkward sounding yell.. and he was yellow with purple spots and spikes.
Growing up I wasn’t really able to express myself in anger or frustration – and I still really struggle with this. One way that I would “act out” my desire to scream at the “unfairness” of it all was to squeeze Yelly and let him cry out for me. It was a great stress reliever. And now I’ve had to give him up to Minho. Not that I’m complaining.. unlike many of his other toys he hasn’t shredded him and ripped out the stuffing.. yet. He gives Yelly love, snuggles with me which is so helpful when I’m stressed. And Minho looks absolutely adorable walking around carrying him in his mouth. I want to remember this.
