Optimism

“Optimism”
Acrylic on Canvas – April 2015

This painting is a sort of the opposite to my earlier misanthropy painting. People can be mean, selfish and hurt you. Sometimes you get jaded by life and relationships and start to believe that everyone is like that or that those people who once upon a time aren’t going to change.

But not everything is terrible. There is an infinite amount of good in this world – for some reason the bad stuff just seems to stand out more than the good. It’s easier to remember the things that people have done to hurt you instead of the things that they’ve done to make you smile. Rather than seeing the rainbow in the sky, sometimes all we see is the dark clouds. Instead of embracing the rain as we did in childhood as a time to dance and laugh, we think “ugh it’s raining!”

This painting makes me think of that youthful optimism – of being a girl who sees the world as a beautiful place. I want that outlook again.
