Acrylic on Canvas – April 2015
As I was painting this I was thinking about time that Richard and I had spent in Italy. The covered walkways are reminiscent of the time that we spent in Bologna. It was so hot that day that we were there that we couldn’t even truly enjoy ourselves. Thankfully I remember having a great hotel – though our schedule was messed up and we realized after we got there that afternoons in the summer when the sun is blazing is not the time to be out and about. The only restaurant we found open to eat at was a kebab house. At times things were miserable but I was thankful for the company.
I also thought of our time in Rome. My favorite place in the whole of Rome is the Circus Maximus. I like to sit on the hill that overlooks it and look at Palatine Hill and Augustus’ Palace. Often I find that if you try to go the same place twice that the second time will never compare to the first. And yet, that is one place that I’ve come back to multiple times (3 I believe) and each time I have to stop and absorb it – to take it all in. Each time I feel that I have a similar spiritual experience. It’s become one of my favorite places in the world. I like it so much that it’s one of the few pictures I have posted.
This painting is my envisioning of what ancient Roma may have been like.
