Lady - Rose

“The Lady – Rose”
Acrylic on Canvas March 2016

This painting is part of a series of self-portraits that depict my thoughts on being a “lady” and what that meant when I was a child. I watched and read a lot of historical fiction as a child and being a prim and proper lady was something my mother tried desperately to instill into her daughter who wanted to wear overalls and play in the dirt. Rose comes from the color of her attire and the giant floral hat that she wears – as every proper lady would have a ridiculous hat and a fan to keep cool and hide coy smiles behind. While I am certainly not like this on a regular everyday basis (I certainly couldn’t deal with all the ruffles!), there is a part of me that loves a good tea with conversation and is saddened that my hat collection is but a few pieces!
