“The Snipe” – Gu Family Book
Acrylic and Mixed Media on Canvas. 2013.
Ever go snipe hunting? There is a small creature that lives deep in the forests on the outskirts of villages and towns. Though many have seen it, few if any have managed to capture it. It dances in the moonlight that wafts between the branches of trees and is easily frightened by the shadows that linger behind trees. Even the slightest noise will scare them away. Oh but they are magical little imps and make the forest come alive and a glorious place to be.
Much like gumiho’s snipes are figments of American children’s fascination that hide in the forests and as a young child I went out in search of them. This painting is my interpretation of the magical wonder that the woods can be at night – a mysterious unknown place where anything can happen.
