May 2013 Acrylic on Canvas
In the Korean drama Nail Shop Paris, the main female character is an internet novelist specializing in fantasy. In thinking about this, nail art and combining it to my own memories of the actual Paris, I created this piece.
Initially in the painting process I tried to envision an orange pinwheel, somewhat like an orange cream-sicle, the popular ice cream that tastes like summer and childhood fantasies. I actually painted this one with my palate knife and it enabled a rougher texture with more unfinished edges though and in trying to create the pinwheel I found a grittiness I hadn’t expected. I then began to see the Eiffel tower as I had witnessed it though with an embodiment I hadn’t expected. It’s difficult to be under the actual Eiffel and be at peace in the grass as it’s concrete pavement with hawkers and tourists en mass. However, in the two times I’d been to Paris I sat in the grass in a slightly secluded spot and got to watch as the magnificent building lit up in relative peace. And so I wanted to create this feeling of nature and grass in between the posts as if they are all engulfing you. Add in some scaffolding and some stars and it’s my fantasy of what the Eiffel could be like (if it were an alternate universe).
