Glow-in-the-Dark Acrylic on Canvas – September 2016
I painted this painting as my friend’s dog died. That sounds like a sad and horrible way to start a description of a painting. But for me, it’s a beautiful one.
You see, this particular dog was very dear to me and to my heart. With the exception of my kitties, she was the only other animal that I have ever specifically painted.
She was a beautiful dog – who came out of tragic circumstances to become one of the sweetest and most gentle pooches I’ve ever met. I have to be honest – there is a part of me that is absolutely terrified of dogs. Not only did she win me over, but I fell in love with Miss Violet. At 13 years old, (9 years after she was supposed to have been put down) she got sick one day and passed away surrounded by her human parents who were devastated by her loss.
I was in the middle of painting and didn’t see when I got the message that she went to the emergency vet. But at the same time my painting took a vivid and colorful turn. I had painted the background sky but planned an aurora with a black silhouette at the bottom. Instead I couldn’t help but keep picking up vivid glow-in-the-dark colors on my brush. What was meant to be black was a vivid array of rainbow glowy (and very purple) mountains. When the painting was done I saw the message and immediately messaged my friend only to find out that Violet was gone. Maybe it’s all in my head, but I feel like it was her way of saying it’s okay and she’s happy. And to me that makes me love it all the more.
