Acrylic on Canvas – July 2017
This painting is titled “Stone Men” for the Dol Hareubang (Stone Grandfather) or large stone statues that are found in the painting that are also found in Korea, most noteably in Jeju Island. You may also recognize their similarity to some of the stone men in the Ghibli movie ‘Spirited Away’. There’s a lot of theories on how they came to be in Korea and they are found elsewhere in Asia, most noteably in China. One theory is that they are guardians to prevent entry of unwanted spirits created by shamans from a magic mushroom cult. They’re also sold in souvenir form to women with fertility problems.. cause nothing says babymaking like stone grandfathers!
In all seriousness though, there was one on our campus in Korea that I always thought was cute and Richard has been asking me for years to paint them. When I finished most of the scenery of this painting and thought something was missing I felt they could be just what I was looking for.
