“Bul Ja So” (Phoenix)
Acrylic on Canvas – June 2017
This one started off as an abstract that I then asked myself where I was going with it and realized I had asked myself that question in Korean. So I started to paint the mountains of Korea and it turned into a bold and vibrant nighttime view of the city with a phoenix rising out carrying a banner that translates to “Breaking Free”. To think about Korea and my memories there is a bittersweet experience, but to paint something I really love I have to give it everything I have and then give it even more. This was painted at the end of a very long day and was my second stream that day. I feel like this intensity actually helped me “let go” and let the painting emerge. Also fun note – the monarchs of Korea sat on the “Phoenix Throne”.
