We ate Jim Dak! ( 찜닭 )
This was the scenario: It was last Sat. afternoon and I had invited my friends Seung Hee and Gi Yeon over to the house to film two videos about Korean Dramas and Korean Fashion Police of November. I used to work with Seung Hee at Suwon Science College and met Gi Yeon at a co-worker house party. I more recently got to see them both at Seung Hee’s house when she invited us over for a wine party!
We of course were hungry after filming so we headed to Suwon Station where there are a ton of restaurants to choose from. We were in the mood for chicken, so Gi Yeon suggested Jim Dak. Because both of them had worked near Suwon before, they knew this great restaurant to eat Jim Dak. This is why Richard and I LOVE eating with locals: they always know the best spots to eat! And man was the food at this restaurant delicious!
There was actually a 15 minute wait for a table when we arrived which is really unusual in Korea. We got a table near the back, and order the 2 chicken Jim Dak for 34,000 Won. (about $31 U.S.) Jim Dak (pronounced ‘jim dahlk’) is a soy-sauced based spicy chicken dish that is ate together in groups. We also ordered two bottles of beer and once the food came we were set!
Compared with the U.S., Korean food is spicy. For us, when we wfirst came to Korea it was almost too much. We have since gotten used to it, and actually prefer spicy food now. So, when we go back to the U.S. food is hardly spicy for us anymore, which is pretty funny. This dish was on the spicy side for me. In the video I rated it a 7 out of 10 (10 being the spiciest) but the Korean girls rated it a 1 or a 2. That’s craziness! I’d hate to go with them to the restaurants that they consider a 7 or an 8 on the spiciness level. No way José!
It was so much fun hanging out with these girls! We giggled our butts off throughout the whole dinner. We might have to have another dinner and bring the video camera along for another vlog. I don’t know, what do you guys think? Should we do this again? If so, how should we do it differently? ^^
Thanks so much for watching, we really appreciate it! We know there are loads of videos out there on the web and tons of bogs to choose from. We truly appreciate your support! ☺
