Cocktail Cove – Lake Norman in Summer

Cocktail Cove is a special place for one of my collectors. Living and boating on Lake Norman in the summertime has become a highlight in the life of their family. I was contacted with the request to paint this memory for a Christmas present. After multiple discussions, photos and video references to make sure that I got the exact details down I set to work. It was quite a fun challenge as I had never quite done any painting like that before. It tested my skills of depth, architecture and landscapes in creating the background. There was so much green and a clear blue sky (at the request of the collector) which I usually would have broken up with clouds and the like. Additionally I had never painted a golf course before, and getting the freshly mowed stripes on the softly rolling greens was quite the experience. As a real memory that needed to be captured I had to be more figurative than imaginative. I was so thrilled that I was able to not only finish it, but have it rush delivered to the collector and his family just in time for Christmas! That may have been the highlight of my own holiday season that year.
