“Sail On”
Acrylic on Canvas, Summer 2013.
This was painted while staying in a cottage located on the shores of the finger lakes of New York. I found myself amazed at how beautiful and peaceful everything was and yet, everything was also in constant motion. I was particularly drawn to one willow tree that was on a tiny islet and the sailboats that would float past.
During that period of time, Richard was listening to a lot of AWOLNation, particularly their song “Sail On”. This was inspired in part by that song, but more that the scene and song reminded me of an older song: Modest Mouse’s “Float On”.
It’s almost like sometimes in life things get so topsy-turvy and the storms seem so difficult it is almost as if we won’t survive them. Yet, if we just keep a steady course and don’t let the violent winds of change shatter us, we will indeed sail on.. and someday things will calm down and we will float on okay.
It is one of my favorite paintings that I did that summer.
