“The Mermaid”
Acrylic on Canvas – June 2015
This painting is inspired by someone dear to my heart. I find that many of us who are dreamers have a mythological creature, Disney character, superhero or other fictional being (or even sports team) that they relate to and possibly in turn become a bit obsessed with. In seeing their choices it says something about the person themselves and their nature. I am personally not drawn to mermaids – I think it has something to do with preferring to swim with my head above the water. However, this special person loves mermaids – is a grown woman with an Ariel themed bathroom, loves swimming in her pool and has the wonderfully curious and headstrong nature of her favorite Disney character. She requested that I paint something with a mermaid.
And so The Mermaid was born. She has a bouquet of kelp and a pearl in a clamshell. And yes, those are dolphins and not sharks swimming in the silvery blue water background.
Although I’m happy with the end result of my first ever mermaid attempt, I have a feeling I’ll be trying again and continuing a line of mythological creatures. Especially as all mermaids, like people and fish themselves must certainly be unique and different. 🙂
