2016 must be the year of the Korean Historical Drama!

Now I know that there are a lot of historical dramas every year, but usually the dramas that the big name actors and actresses sign on for are more modern dramas or at least modern/historical time traveling dramas. There will be at least one of those (Scarlet Heart: Ryeo) in this historical drama list, and there are a lot of modern dramas starring really talented actors/actresses. But let me just talk about a few of actors who chose to go historical and why I find it odd.

Jang Geun Suk for example has waited 3 years since he last made a drama.. and it’s been 8 years since he was in a historical drama (unless you consider Love Rain a historical) and he’s never had a leading role in a historical drama before.

Park Seo Joon, who was arguably huge last year starring in the two most popular dramas of 2015, has never acted in a historical drama. And yet, he’s donning the wig and sword with the lead role in Hwarang: The Beginning! Another brand new to the genre is IU who’s starring opposite the king of historicals (Lee Joon Gi) in Scarlet Heart. And don’t forget Go Ara who’s done the flashback to 1994 but not ancient times!

It took me some time to really love Historical Korean dramas, but now it’s one of my favorite genres. I’m anticipating to see what these very talented fresh faces bring to dramaland in 2016!
