It’s almost March and there’s so much happening in the Korean drama world. There’s plenty of new historical dramas to check out, a time travel mystery and one about how to become a popstar!
I made a huge mistake in reviewing these Top 5 in that one of these dramas isn’t actually being released in March. In doing my research I came upon multiple websites talking about the various dramas coming out with the different networks. One of these that was posted “to be released in March” was ‘The Goddess of Fire, Jeongi’. It looks like an amazing drama as it’s about the first famous female pottery artist in South Korea who lived during the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Later captured and taken to Japan she used her exile to help promote Korean pottery. This poignant story coupled with the famous Moon Geun Young makes a very compelling drama. At least it’s a drama I want to see. This being said I added it to my list of dramas to review, only to find out the day after filming that it’s been moved back until after Gu Family Book and will likely come out sometime this summer. I should have known better, Moon Geun Young practically just finished ‘Cheongdamdong Alice’. And seriously, who wouldn’t need a break after filming most of a drama in sub-zero temperatures. All in all though, it looks to be a great drama and better timing after some of the drama that follows her Cheongdamdong Alice co-star Park Si Hoo. Some dramatic things are worth waiting for..
In the meantime – there’s plenty of historical options to keep you entertained. If you were a fan of ‘Time Travel Dr. Jin’ or ‘Faith – The Great Doctor’ then this month is for you. ‘Gu Am Heo Joo’ is a historical medical drama that may or may not actually teach you something about ancient oriental medicine. However, it’s a famous story that’s greatly loved by the Korean people as this particular doctor wrote one of the most famous medical textbooks and was a personal physician of the King. Not too sure about this one at 120 episodes, but I’ll at least check out the first episode. Also there in the historical mix is a drama about evil concubines called ‘Cruel Palace – War of Flowers’, and what looks like it’s going to be another sweet time traveling drama called ‘Nine: Nine Time Travels’, because seriously, who doesn’t wish that they could travel back in time – even if it’s only nine times.
Probably the most exciting Korean drama coming out this month is Lee Soon Shin is the best. It’s about a girl from one of the Korean islands who travels to Seoul after her father’s death and works her way into the Korean entertainment industry and becomes a star. This story doesn’t seem that original – because frankly, what young girl doesn’t want to become a popstar at least once in her life. And by that, ahem, I mean myself. What does seem quite original is the inclusion of the islands surrounding Korea. As they are referring to it as “an island” I’m assuming it’s not Jeju Island, the famous island south of South Korea that’s a favorite amongst school kids and honeymooners. I’m interested to find out exactly which island they’re talking about as they’re not shown as often on Korean dramas – and because it’s going to instantly become a popular destination if this drama is a hit.
With this stigma, it’s not surprising they needed a young, beautiful and talented face to pull this drama off. Who’s the girl for the job? The “nation’s sweetheart” herself IU. What is unusual is that she’s only starred in one drama before this headlining appearance. However, she really made an impact in 2011’s Dream High. While since then, she’s only been making cameo appearances in dramas in the last year, she’s still been busy. She graduated from high school on February 9th and already she’s heading up her own drama. No small undertaking for a starlet. I’m really looking forward to watching this one and seeing if she can truly pull it off and carry this drama.
