It’s the last Friday in July and if you’ve been following our videos for awhile now it should be no surprise what this week’s countdown topic is.. NEW August Kdramas!!

In looking at all of the new ones coming out, I noted a few interesting commonalities. First, most of them are KBS2 or TvN dramas. These being channels that feature dramas that are a bit quirky, and fun romantic comedies, I knew that there would be some fun dramas coming out this month.

The second major pattern I saw was that several of these dramas are interpretations of pretty popular classic texts. Again, this was not really a surprise – especially with TvN. Last spring for example, when they aired Flower Boy Next Door, it was a retelling of the story of Rapunzel with a definite modern comic drama twist. This year there are two coming out this month that are CLEARLY retelling of older text. The first one is The Mermaid, and the second is The Three Musketeers.

The Mermaid is also being titled ‘The Idle Mermaid’. She plays a mermaid that falls in love with a human (a guy) She wants to be with a human man and has 100 days to make a human fall in love with her. In the meantime she stays at a place where a bunch of people who are trying to get jobs live. So job searching and mermaids. The 100 days thing reminds me of ‘My Girlfriend is a Gumiho’ because you have the whole 100 days struggle to stay human.

My number one drama coming out this month is The Three Musketeers. First reason I’m really excited to see this one is because it has several pretty good looking guyz that I’ve almost always seen in second or third lead guy roles. I’m really excited to see them in a drama that looks slightly more balanced. The other thing about this one is a good Joseon action drama with a compelling plot only comes around a couple of times a year. The last one I saw, which I still miss is Empress Ki which finished in April. Mind you I still have to begin watching Night Watchmen’s Journal which I talk about in the New July 2014 Korean Drama Top 5 Friday, but I’m really excited to see this epic story which I think just finished its run as a play on Korean stages being turned into a drama.

I’m also a sucker for the Three Musketeers story since growing up myself and two of my friends called ourselves The Three Musketeers. Funny enough, we still call ourselves that.
