There comes a point in every year since I’ve been watching/reviewing Korean dramas where you get a “this is the one” drama. These fantastic dramas (though some end up dated in time) have great cinematography, terrific acting and perfectly developed scripted plots.
They keep you hanging on the edge of your seat waiting for the next week’s episode. Then with the final episode (which likely leaves you in tears – typically happy tears) you are left in a stupor wondering how can anyone ever top this drama? How could they make something so good that will keep me as enraptured ever again???
Somehow, someway in Korean dramaland they keep doing it year after year. For me, this is 2016’s drama. They certainly tried with Descendants of the Sun – and don’t get me wrong, it was something unlike anything I’d ever seen. But to me, DOTS (besides having a silly acronym) was all hyped up and lost steam as the drama came to a close. It was predictable, the writing was a bit eh.. and though the acting was great, looking back you can see how, though it was a great cone.. it was missing the sprinkles. Do ya know what I mean?!?!
W on the other hand kept me in suspense with every episode. You could argue that flashbacks and recap shots were too prevalent – but it made it possible to start watching in the middle of the drama and not be completely and totally lost with who the characters were and what was going on. There really wasn’t a single actor that I felt left their best acting at home. Sure there was a healthy smattering of kiss scenes in the drama – but each one became an important moment. It didn’t feel like anything was thrown in just because.. There was bloody action, romance, horror elements, a mystery, and heartwarming family/friendship moments. I laughed, I cried. I got angry at myself for watching it late at night. I found myself being caught up in another world.. within the drama world and grew quite introspective about perspective and reality.
Okay, maybe the longest blog post ever. But this drama may be my new favorite drama of all time. It’s a great one that I would highly recommend – and think it would be great if you’ve got someone you’re trying to get into kdramas. So, that’s me.
What about you guyz, what do you think? What are your thoughts on W? Is it the best Korean Drama in 2016? Let me know in the comments!
Happy Drama Watching!!!!
