“Transition – Equinox” – August 2015
Acrylic on Canvas
I have to admit, I actually took the idea for this one in part from my in-laws. They had gone to one of those wine and painting classes and had made two tree canvases that when put together, their branches formed into a heart. So yes, it’s loosely based on that idea. It’s also, as you can tell from the title a mix of spring and fall – which are my two favorite seasons. I also have a mini-series that exists if only in my head of paintings titled “transition”. There is a reoccuring purple squares theme to them.. oddly enough!
But really, I started this painting in spring. I tried to create an abstract cherry blossom paint effect that was kind of pixelated. I did this by stamping the canvas with a cut potato stamp and paint. But I wasn’t satisfied with how it turned out and just let it sit… fast forward several months and it’s now starting to head into fall. A major event that just happened prior to painting this was watching my sister pack up with her kids and move overseas. She’s younger than me, but such a great mother. It made me start thinking about what kind of mother I will be someday. Like it or not, we and our world are all a reflection of those who have come before. And this made me think of my mother (born in Spring) and my mother-in-law (born in fall) and the love that I have for both of them despite their flaws. I hope I can learn from these flaws and become a great one in my own right… someday!
