“Tree of Light”
Glow in the Dark Acrylic on Canvas – January 2016
This was a painting in two parts. The first part being a painting that to me was quite deep and meaningful but was kind of a joke to my husband and friends. You see, I wanted to paint my impression of what that warm feeling is when you leave this place.. like that feeling of floating in the bathtub or falling asleep under a tree on a sunny day. That light warmth that is almost white but is really colorful at the same time. Hubs (being somewhat color-blind) thought it was a blank canvas. The overall impression of it, to quote my friend Danielle – “Someday Steph, you’re going to paint a canvas and it’s all just going to be white and you’ll call it art.” To which I responded by saying, “funny enough you say that..” showing her the painting and we had a VERY good laugh..
I knew that although it was perfect to me, that my vision wouldn’t make sense to most people. So one day I felt inspired to paint a tree over it. Not just any tree though, one that was black and rough looking.. but with a lot of branches and roots. I then used glow in the dark white paint to make the leaves. It creates the effect of a tree that no matter if the lights are on or off, I feel that light feeling. That life and growth just flooding me with warmth. It’s like a dream – but unlike my dreams which are often nightmares it’s a simple soft one.. that glows!
