Aster

“Aster”
Abstract Acrylic on Canvas – May 2015

Once upon a time, when I was a little girl, I was a girlscout with a sash full of patches. One of those patches was for learning about the different types of flowers. I still remember my two favorites at the time were due to their names: Aster and Chrysanthemum. I used to be so proud of myself for spelling chrysanthemum – though now admittedly I had to rely on a spellchecker. But Aster to me sounded so beautiful.. like a star, which I later found out was the actual reason why it has that name. And frankly, I liked them because I liked the color purple, not that any of you would be surprised with my purple hair.

In painting this one I wanted to paint a flower, with some symmetry or a star. It ended up being more flower than star, and may not have enough petals to be accurate. But to me, it’s clearly an aster.
