Gatehouse

“The Gatehouse”
Acrylic on Canvas – July 2015

After a long stint without it, Richard and I finally made and ate Korean food. Trying to describe that experience – a place so different from where I had grown up, adopted and then going back to the taste after so long. It was almost like reading a fantasy book. Like Korea was Wonderland or Oz and I was remembering it like it was a dream though for 6 years it was my reality: good and bad. I tried to capture this first taste of my second home with a painting inspired by one of the last sights I saw in Korea. Our last night we took a walk around the fortress. Due to hunger, darkness and a last minute meetup with a friend we had to cut our walk short. However, the last part that we explored was one of the gates/gatehouses. Massive structures, the cut stones glowed in the light of the lamps and moon. I will always treasure this memory. Even if we were to go back, it just wouldn’t be the same.
