Going to the movies for Koreans is like a national pastime for young people. Ask any random teenager or 20-something what they like to do in their spare time and they’ll most likely answer ‘go to the movies’. What is one of the most common places to go on a date? Surprise surprise: it’s the movies.

There are several reasons for this. For starters, there are lots of high quality movies at this point that are being produced by the Korean entertainment industry. The amount of Korean movies versus all foreign movies combined being shown in the average Korean theatre is higher than 50%. So for instance, in a twelve screen theatre that would be at least seven Korean movies at any given time. That’s significant in our opinion. Oh, and did we mention some Korean movies are really entertaining too?!?

Another reason going to the movies is so popular is because theatres are modern, clean, and located in so many places. It’s easy to find a theatre near you. They are sometimes located at major subway stops, and sometimes one can go from the subway straight into the theatre without even going outside. That’s pretty darn neat!

Anyone can reserve tickets and even the exact seat online to the theatre you want to attend prior to even leaving your house. This may be in many developed nations at this point, but it’s still a tremendous convenience. Theatres offer discounts to people reserving in advance too!

It’s good clean fun going to the movies. We’ve been a handful of times, though I admit that Richard and I don’t go as often as I’d like to. But that’s okay. With the internet as fast as it is and YouTube at our disposal, there is no shortage of video entertainment from the comfort of our own home. I know it’s not exactly the same thing, but oh well. We can’t have everything we want in life now can we? ☺

Thanks for being awesome supporters of Hallyu Back. These past two weeks have been unbelievable with my dad in Korea. He heads home tomorrow and I’m feeling bittersweet. I know I’m gonna get to see him this summer, but he’s my dad, and I have no idea when he’ll be back. I’m just so lucky he came here to visit me at all. It’s been really fun having him here. Thanks again for following along on our adventures.
