“New Year”
Acrylic on Canvas – January 2017

This painting is based on a photo and a memory of my hometown in Korea, and my overall interpretation of the two meshed to create my feelings surrounding the place. The photo that was used as a reference is one taken in February of 2014 during the Lunar New Year’s celebrations. Richard had been unable to sleep so he had gone on a VERY long walk in the cold winter weather. Watching the sun rise behind one of the buildings in Hwaseong fortress, he took a photo that to this day is one of my favorites from our 6+ years there together.

Recently, he’d been suggesting that I paint that photo, but it seemed all too simple to me. So I envisioned what it might have looked like in winter when there weren’t skyscraper apartments in the background and with Yongyeon pond (famous for it’s beauty and capturing the sky in the foreground.

It’s also the first painting I made in 2017, and so I find the title most appropriate.
