Woman From Oz
Acrylic on Canvas – 2019

The Wizard of Oz. A story that I was all too familiar with as a child and one that I found myself struggling to resonate with. It all seemed odd and out of touch. I ended up asking more questions in my head than was acceptable to voice – Glinda is a good witch but why does she seem so scary? What did the “wicked witch” do that was so wrong besides try to get her sister’s magic shoes from the girl whose house murdered the sibling? Why does pretty = good, ugly = bad and wasn’t Dorothy far too naive for a farm girl who was likely used to far more and bigger daily survival struggles or did she hit her head in that tornado? Regardless, it was when I was in high school that I read the story Wicked for the first time and I felt drawn to the character of Elphaba. I resonated with her a lot – a love for animals and the downtrodden, trying to fit in but always feeling like an outsider, loving books and talking to animals more than people… So many things.
